Just this week the Bulgarian government resigned after a wave of street protests. The reason? The effects of austerity on the population’s living standards and allegations of corruption in government. Bulgaria is not a member of the euro area, but is among the countries theoretically obliged to eventually join. Bulgaria has survived the debt crisis without requiring aid, by imposing fairly strict austerity measures. That era may be coming to an end.
